Medieval Rochester and the Siege of 1215

In 2015, Historical Promotions and Event Management worked with Medway Council, Pixelwork Productions and Strood Academy for the 800th anniversary of the signing of the Magna Carta and siege of Rochester Castle. This important event on Medway’s calendar gave us the opportunity to work with various organisations to create an innovative and alternative medium to explore the Medieval city of Rochester. The brief called for us to work alongside Medway Council and Pixelwork Productions in producing an app by incorporating a new tour of the town, a film with community involvement, a printed map and brochure along with aerial filming.

For the filming, Rob Butler from Historical Promotions acted as Casting Director to bring in a talented and professional team of interpreters and re-enactors to create a series of historical re-constructions to create a Medieval Village, showing the life and times of the period. The filming was undertaken as a community project in conjunction with Strood Academy and developed to run alongside Rochester Castle’s Siege Exhibition and summer events programme with content of the film added to the newly developed app.

The filming has also been uploaded to social media and is frequently used as an educational resource for schools and the local community.

Clients Comments:

"Just wanted to drop you a line to say what a fantastic bunch of re-enactors you organised for us! Pixelwork, Strood Academy and ourselves were thrilled at the quality and professionalism of each of them, and the setting looked stunning with all the stalls set up. They all also took on board our aims for the day, in that it was a young-person created and directed film, and the re-enactors, especially King John, were particularly helpful in helping the pupils to realise what it was they wanted to get across."

"Thank you for casting such a great team of professional historical extras and re-constructions, which simplified our role in directing the filming with the students from Strood Academy and in saving us considerable time in post-production editing!"
